Trachycarpus fortunei (Windmill Palm)
Commonly known as Windmill Palm, is a cold-hardy palm valued for its fan-shaped fronds and distinctive fibrous trunk. Commonly used as a specimen tree, accent plant, or in tropical-style landscapes, it provides a classic palm appearance while tolerating cooler temperatures better than most palms.
Water Requirements: Low to moderate. Drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then as needed.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Adapts to sandy, loamy, or clay soils; prefers slightly acidic to neutral conditions.
Growth Rate: Moderate.
Bloom Time: Spring; produces clusters of small flowers followed by ornamental fruit.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 7–11. Excellent cold tolerance for a palm; can withstand temperatures down to around 10°F (–12°C) once established.
Pruning: Minimal. Remove dead or damaged fronds as needed; avoid excessive pruning.
Toxicity: Not considered toxic to people or pets.
