Is a Florida-native evergreen shrub valued for its glossy foliage, red berry-like fruit, and tolerance of shade. Often used in native, tropical, and woodland landscapes, it attracts birds and pollinators and serves as a reliable understory shrub in warm climates. Despite its name, the berries are not true coffee beans but provide food for wildlife. f
Water Requirements: Low to moderate. Drought tolerant once established but prefers occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Grows well in sandy, loamy, and slightly acidic soils.
Growth Rate: Moderate.
Bloom Time: Spring to fall; produces small clusters of fragrant white flowers.
Temperature: Tropical/subtropical. Hardy in zones 9–11. Sensitive to frost; protect during cold snaps.
Pruning: Minimal. Light pruning to shape or maintain size. Responds well to trimming and can be kept compact.
Toxicity: Not considered toxic to people or pets. Berries are edible but bland and not used for true coffee.
