Mimosa strigillosa (Sunshine Mimosa)
Is a Florida-native, low-growing perennial groundcover valued for its fine-textured foliage, nitrogen-fixing ability, and soft pink, powder-puff flowers. Commonly used as a turf alternative, groundcover, or filler in native and naturalized landscapes, it spreads quickly and provides excellent erosion control while supporting pollinators.
Water Requirements: Low to moderate. Drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then as needed.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs well in sandy soils and tolerates poor, dry sites.
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast.
Bloom Time: Spring through fall; produces small, pink, powder-puff flowers.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11. Excellent heat tolerance; may experience dieback after frost but typically returns in warm weather.
Pruning: Minimal. Can be mowed or trimmed to control spread or maintain a tidy appearance.
