Sugar Palm is a large, tropical, clumping palm known for its dramatic, arching fronds and tall, upright growth. Often used in tropical and subtropical landscapes for its bold presence and its ability to form impressive multi-stemmed clumps over time.
Water Requirements: Moderate. Prefers consistent moisture but can tolerate brief dry periods once established.
Soil: Well-draining, rich soil; thrives in loamy or sandy soils with organic matter.
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under optimal conditions.
Bloom Time: Produces large, hanging inflorescences. Flowers appear once per stem before that stem slowly declines (semi-monocarpic).
Temperature: Tropical/subtropical. Cold sensitive; hardy to about 28–32°F (–2 to 0°C). Protect from frost.
Pruning: Minimal. Remove spent or declining fronds as needed. Avoid cutting green fronds.
Toxicity: Fruits and sap can be irritating; fibers on leaf bases may cause skin irritation.
