Mentha spicata (Spearmint)
Commonly known as Spearmint, is a fast-growing aromatic perennial herb valued for its refreshing flavor and fragrant foliage. Commonly grown in herb gardens, containers, and culinary landscapes, it spreads readily and provides fresh leaves used in beverages, cooking, and herbal teas.
Water Requirements: Moderate. Prefers consistently moist soil; water regularly during the first growing season and during extended dry periods.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in fertile, organic-rich soils but adapts to sandy or loamy soils with adequate moisture.
Growth Rate: Fast.
Bloom Time: Summer; produces upright spikes of small flowers that attract pollinators.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 4–11. Excellent heat tolerance and survives light frost; may die back in colder climates but regrows in spring.
