Coccoloba uvifera (Seagrape – Bush Form)
Description:
Coccoloba uvifera, commonly known as Seagrape, is a Florida-native evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its large, round leaves and coastal durability. In bush form, it is commonly used as a hedge, screen, or natural barrier, especially in coastal landscapes. It provides excellent wind and salt tolerance while adding a bold, tropical appearance.
Water Requirements: Low to moderate. Drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then as needed.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in sandy soils; highly tolerant of poor soils, salt, and coastal conditions.
Growth Rate: Moderate.
Bloom Time: Spring to summer; produces small, inconspicuous flowers followed by grape-like fruit.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 10–11. Excellent heat and salt tolerance; sensitive to frost and may be damaged below 30°F (–1°C).
Pruning: Moderate. Responds well to pruning and can be shaped into a dense hedge or maintained as a shrub.
Toxicity: Not considered toxic to people or pets; fruit is edible.
