Cycas revoluta (King Sago Palm)
Commonly known as King Sago Palm, is a slow-growing cycad valued for its symmetrical form and stiff, feathery foliage. Despite its name, it is not a true palm. Commonly used as a specimen plant, foundation accent, or container feature, it provides strong architectural interest and a formal, tropical look in residential and commercial landscapes.
Water Requirements: Low to moderate. Drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then allow soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in sandy soils; highly tolerant of poor soils but does not tolerate standing water.
Growth Rate: Slow.
Bloom Time: Non-flowering; produces cone-like reproductive structures typical of cycads.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11. Excellent heat tolerance; can tolerate brief cold spells but may be damaged below 20°F (–6°C).
Pruning: Minimal. Remove only fully brown or damaged fronds; avoid over-pruning.
Toxicity: Highly toxic if ingested; all parts of the plant, especially seeds, are poisonous to pets and humans.
