Salvia rosmarinus (formerly Rosmarinus officinalis) – Rosemary
Commonly known as Rosemary, is an aromatic evergreen shrub valued for its needle-like foliage and culinary uses. Commonly used in herb gardens, borders, containers, and low hedges, it provides year-round texture, fragrance, and drought tolerance in residential and Mediterranean-style landscapes.
Water Requirements: Low. Highly drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then sparingly as needed. Avoid overwatering.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in sandy or rocky soils and tolerates poor soils if drainage is good.
Growth Rate: Moderate.
Bloom Time: Late winter through spring; may bloom intermittently throughout the year in warm climates, producing small flowers.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 8–10. Excellent heat tolerance; may be damaged by prolonged freezing temperatures below 20°F (–6°C).
Pruning: Minimal to moderate. Trim after flowering to maintain shape and encourage dense growth; tolerates light shearing.
Toxicity: Not considered toxic to people or pets.
