Iris ‘Milky Way’
Is a striking bearded iris known for its large, ruffled blooms and soft, celestial-inspired coloration. Part of the Southern Living Plant Collection, it was selected for its reliability, strong garden performance, and ability to thrive in warm climates. This iris makes an excellent focal point in borders, cottage gardens, or mixed perennial beds, offering dramatic spring color with minimal maintenance.
Water Requirements: Low to moderate. Requires regular moisture during active growth and blooming, but rhizomes must not sit in soggy soil. Drought tolerant once established.
Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soil. Avoid heavy clay unless amended. Plant rhizomes shallowly for best performance.
Growth Rate: Moderate.
Bloom Time: Spring. Some climates may see a light rebloom in fall.
Temperature: Hardy in zones 5–9. Heat tolerant and performs well in Southern landscapes. Can withstand winter cold but requires good drainage to prevent rot.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms to maintain appearance. Trim foliage to 6–8 inches in late fall or when leaves decline. Divide clumps every 2–3 years to maintain vigor.
Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested; rhizomes may cause stomach upset. Sap can irritate skin in sensitive individuals.
