Commonly known as Hybrid Saw Palmetto, is a selected or cultivated form of the native saw palmetto valued for improved uniformity, fuller growth habit, and often enhanced color. Commonly used in mass plantings, native landscapes, and commercial applications, it provides durable groundcover, erosion control, and a more refined appearance compared to wild types.
Water Requirements: Low. Highly drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then rarely as needed.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in sandy soils; highly tolerant of poor soils and coastal conditions.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate (often more uniform than native forms).
Bloom Time: Spring; produces small flowers followed by berry-like fruit.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11. Excellent heat and cold tolerance; very resilient once established.
Pruning: Minimal. Remove only dead or damaged fronds; avoid excessive pruning.
Toxicity: Not considered toxic to people or pets; berries may be used for wildlife and herbal purposes.
