Commonly known as Green Saw Palmetto, is a Florida-native, low-growing palm valued for its dense, clumping habit and fan-shaped fronds. Commonly used in native landscapes, mass plantings, and naturalized areas, it provides excellent groundcover, erosion control, and wildlife habitat while adding a rugged, natural look to residential and commercial settings.
Water Requirements: Low. Highly drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then rarely as needed.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in sandy soils; highly tolerant of poor soils and coastal conditions.
Growth Rate: Slow.
Bloom Time: Spring; produces small flowers followed by berry-like fruit.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11. Excellent heat and cold tolerance; very resilient once established.
Pruning: Minimal. Remove only dead or damaged fronds; avoid excessive pruning.
Toxicity: Not considered toxic to people or pets; berries are used for wildlife and herbal purposes.
