Curcuma species (Curcuma / Hidden Ginger)

Commonly known as Curcuma or Hidden Ginger, are tropical perennials valued for their lush foliage and striking, long-lasting flower bracts. Commonly used in shaded landscape beds, tropical gardens, mass plantings, and containers, they provide bold foliage, seasonal color, and a lush tropical appearance. Curcuma grows from underground rhizomes and typically enters dormancy during the cooler months before returning in spring. 

Water Requirements: Moderate. Prefers consistently moist soil during active growth; water regularly during the growing season and reduce watering when plants enter winter dormancy.

Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in fertile, organic-rich soil with good moisture retention but does not tolerate prolonged waterlogged conditions.

Growth Rate: Moderate to fast during warm weather.

Bloom Time: Late spring through summer; produces showy, long-lasting flower bracts held above or among the foliage.

Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 8–11, depending on species and cultivar. Excellent heat and humidity tolerance; foliage dies back after frost or during winter dormancy.

Pruning: Minimal. Remove spent flowers and yellowing foliage as needed. Cut dormant foliage back after it has naturally declined.

Toxicity: Generally not considered toxic to people or pets.
