Bromeliads
Are tropical, colorful rosette-forming plants prized for their bold foliage, striking bracts, and ability to thrive in containers or shaded landscape areas. They add an instant exotic look and are commonly used on patios, in tropical gardens, and as indoor accent plants.
Water Requirements: Low to moderate. Keep the central “cup” filled with fresh water; allow soil to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogged soil.
Soil: Well-draining, airy soil—orchid mix, bark-based potting mix, or sandy loam.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate depending on species.
Bloom Time: Once per rosette (monocarpic). Colorful bracts and flowers last for months; offsets (“pups”) form afterward.
Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures. Cold sensitive; protect below 40°F (4°C). Many types can tolerate brief dips to 30–32°F (0°C) with protection.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms. Trim dried leaves. Once the mother plant declines, remove it and allow pups to grow.
Toxicity: Generally non-toxic to people and pets. Leaf edges may be sharp on some species.
