Dypsis lutescens (Areca Palm / Butterfly Palm)
Commonly known as Areca Palm, is a clumping tropical palm valued for its feathery, arching fronds and soft, lush appearance. Commonly used as a hedge, screen, or specimen plant, it provides a dense, tropical look and is widely used in residential and commercial landscapes, as well as interior spaces.
Water Requirements: Moderate. Prefers consistently moist soil; water regularly during the first growing season and during extended dry periods. Avoid waterlogged conditions.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in rich, slightly acidic soils but adapts to sandy soils with proper irrigation.
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast.
Bloom Time: Inconspicuous; produces small flowers followed by ornamental fruit in ideal conditions.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 10–11. Excellent heat tolerance; sensitive to cold and may be damaged below 30°F (–1°C).
Pruning: Minimal. Remove only dead or damaged fronds; avoid over-pruning.
Toxicity: Not considered toxic to people or pets.
