Aloe vera
Is an evergreen succulent valued for its thick, fleshy leaves and low-maintenance nature. Commonly used in xeriscape landscapes, tropical designs, and containers, it serves as an accent plant and drought-tolerant focal point. Its bold, architectural form adds texture and year-round interest to residential and commercial plantings.
Water Requirements: Low. Highly drought tolerant once established; water regularly during the first growing season, then infrequently as needed, allowing soil to dry between waterings.
Soil: Well-draining soil. Performs best in sandy or gritty soils; adaptable to poor soils and well suited to cactus or succulent mixes.
Growth Rate: Slow to moderate.
Bloom Time: Late winter through spring; produces tall flower spikes with tubular blooms.
Temperature: Hardy in USDA Zones 9–11. Excellent heat tolerance; sensitive to frost and may be damaged below 28°F (–2°C).
Pruning: Minimal. Remove spent flower stalks and damaged or older outer leaves as needed.
Toxicity: Toxic to pets if ingested. Gel is commonly used topically for humans but should not be ingested without proper preparation.
